Studying microbial interactions in the ocean is one of my passions as a scientist, however not the only one. As a Puerto Rican in Marine Sciences, I’ve been a first-hand witness to the lack of diversity in the field. These experiences have made me aware of the challenges that ethnic minorities face in biogeochemical sciences, and how difficult it can be for minorities such as Latino, Black, and other underrepresented groups in science to be successful scientists in such a demanding field. These open access articles talk about some of the issues underrepresented minorities face in science and how together we could work towards creating a more equitable environment for all scientist.
